Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis

Overview

Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis is a condition that primarily affects individuals before the age of 15, with 2/3 of cases occurring in this age group. It rarely undergoes malignant change.

Causes

  • HPV Types:
    • HPV 6-11 are the most common strains associated with this condition.
    • HPV 16-18 are linked to malignancy.

Risks

  • Younger first-time mother: There is an increased risk if the mother has condyloma acuminata.

Lesions

  • The lesions are wart-like and resemble a cluster of grapes.

Types

  • Juvenile
  • Senile

Symptoms

  • Hoarseness
  • Stridor

Treatment

  • Primary Treatment:
    • Laser excision
    • Microdebrider
  • Adjunctive Therapy:
    • Cidofovir
    • Acyclovir
    • Interferon
