Patient Brief Record / Brief Scenario
- Your next patient is new to you.
- Adopt a patient-centred approach to maintain good relation with him and solve his problem.
- Vital signs were all normal i.e. (T, BP, PR & Body weight).
- This is about 8 minutes consultation.

Instructions for Simulator Patient (SP)
- Your name is Khalid, 40-Years old, married, you have six children, all in school.
- For the last month, you are feeling not like before, you feel sad and your mood is low.
- You lost interest in everything, you are shouting to your children.
- Start by saying that you want pills to help you sleep.
Tell your doctor only if she specifically asked you:
- You are working as a Taxi-Driver, you are not coping well with your job.
- This is because your sleep is disturbed & you wake early, so you feel tired all the time.
- During the last Month or 2 Weeks, your mood is low & you lost interest and pleasure, you are not happy at all.
- Before your habit is watching TV, now not enjoying that.
- One Year ago, you have a loan from the bank to buy a taxi, but because of your family commitments and you are renting a house, you were unable to pay for the bank their monthly fees, the bank threatening you that they might take the car.
- Your appetite is poor & you lost some body weight.
Additional Details
- You are unable to concentrate.
- You want to be alone and unable to talk to friends.
- You are a smoker/20 cig/day for more than 10 Years.
- You neglect yourself & your children.
- You see the future dark.
- You think of harming yourself but no suicidal ideation, because you think about your children & of being Muslim.
Questions to Ask the Doctor
- Ask your doctor about what wrong with you.
- The doctor will tell you – This is depression, ask him whether you have a mental illness.
- Ask about the treatment. Ask that you heard this treatment you are going to use to (Addicted).
- If your doctor gave you 2 sorts of treatment – say you want both treatments.
- Ask for how long you will be on this treatment.
