Intraventricular Hemorrhage

It is a predominant disorder of preterm infants. It originates in the periventricular subependymal germinal matrix with subsequent entrance of blood into the ventricular system.

Symptoms

  • Apnea
  • Bradycardia
  • Acidosis
  • Seizures

Diagnosis

Ultrasonography through the anterior fontanelle.

Risk Factors

  • Extreme prematurity
  • RDS
  • Ventilated preterm infants
  • Seizures
  • Sudden elevation of arterial BP

Complications

  • Hydrocephalus
  • Developmental impairment
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Seizures
