• Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the thumb, index, middle fingers, and radial half of the ring fingers

• Causes:

  • Idiopathic
  • Obesity
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Trauma

• Clinical tests:

  • Phalen’s test: reproduces symptoms (1 minute)
  • Tinel’s sign: reproduces the symptoms

• Treatment:

  • Rest – splints
  • NSAID
  • Ultrasound / Cold packs
  • Steroid injection!
  • Surgical decompression of carpal tunnel
