Keratomalacia

  • Non-infective ulceration and melting of the cornea

    • Vitamin A (malnourished infants or malabsorption in adults)
  • Clinical Picture

    • Loss of corneal luster

    • Melting of the cornea

    • No inflammatory reaction (quite eye)

    • Corneal hypothesis

    • 2ry infection → Endophthalmitis

  • Treatment

    • Vit. A injection (200,000 IU/day) & Treatment of hypoproteinemia (fresh plasma)
    • Topical vit. A in early cases
    • Surgical Treatment in late cases:
      • Therapeutic CL
      • penetrating keratoplasty (PK)
