- It is ultralong-acting insulin analog.
- Prepared by substitution of glycine for asparagine at the A21 position and adding 2 arginine molecules to the B chain terminal.
- Insulin molecules dissolve slowly from the injection site and provide a low, continuous level of circulating insulin.
- Insulin glargine has:
- Slow onset: 1-1.5 hrs.
- Peak after 4-5 hrs.
- Duration of action: 11-24 hrs.
Advantages over intermediate-acting insulins:
