Head Injury

Definition

A head injury is any injury that results in trauma to the skull or brain.

Causes

Common causes of head injury include:

• Accidents at home, work, outdoors, or while playing sports
• Falls
• Physical assault
• Traffic accidents

Classification

Head injuries can be classified into two main categories: Closed and Open.

Closed Injury

• Hematoma
• Concussion
• Diffuse axonal injury
• Brain contusion

Open Injury

• Skull fractures
  • Linear skull fractures
  • Depressed skull fractures.
  • Diastatic skull fractures
  • Basilar skull fracture
• Scalp Wound (abrasions,bruises,lacerations)
