Chronic Sialoadenitis

Mainly submandibular salivary gland.

Presentation

  • Swelling in the digastric triangle characterized by:
    • History of pain and increased size of swelling during eating.
    • Swelling is solitary, cannot be rolled over the edge of the mandible.
    • Inspection of the mouth floor may reveal redness of the duct orifice.
    • Bimanual palpation reveals that swelling is filling the floor of the mouth.

Investigation

  • Plain X-ray show stone.
  • Sialogram → sialectasis (dilated duct).

Treatment

  • Treatment of predisposing factors + antibiotics + mouth wash.
  • Surgery for chronic submandibular sialoadenitis → submandibular sialoadenotomy.
