Chronic Sialoadenitis
Mainly submandibular salivary gland.
Presentation
- Swelling in the digastric triangle characterized by:
- History of pain and increased size of swelling during eating.
- Swelling is solitary, cannot be rolled over the edge of the mandible.
- Inspection of the mouth floor may reveal redness of the duct orifice.
- Bimanual palpation reveals that swelling is filling the floor of the mouth.
Investigation
- Plain X-ray show stone.
- Sialogram → sialectasis (dilated duct).
Treatment
- Treatment of predisposing factors + antibiotics + mouth wash.
- Surgery for chronic submandibular sialoadenitis → submandibular sialoadenotomy.
