Alpha-Glucosidase inhibitors (starch blockers): Eg. Acarbose

  • They act by competitive inhibition of intestinal α-glucosidase enzyme → ↓ digestion & absorption of carbohydrates.
  • Given as monotherapy or in combination with Sulphonylureas in type II.
  • SlE:Flatulance , abdominal pain & diarrhea may occur.
  • GIT side effects are common: flatulence, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
  • They should be avoided in patients with inflammatory bowel disease or renal impairment.
