Alpha-Glucosidase inhibitors (starch blockers): Eg. Acarbose
- They act by competitive inhibition of intestinal α-glucosidase enzyme → ↓ digestion & absorption of carbohydrates.
- Given as monotherapy or in combination with Sulphonylureas in type II.
- SlE:Flatulance , abdominal pain & diarrhea may occur.
- GIT side effects are common: flatulence, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
- They should be avoided in patients with inflammatory bowel disease or renal impairment.
