Mechanism of action:
a broad spectrum anti-helmintic except trematodes block glucose uptake by the parasite leading to decrease production of energy and subsequent parasite immobilization
Uses:
- treatment of *roundworm, pinworm, hookworm infection *
- alternative treatment of *threadworm, filariasis *
- hydatid disease & cysticercosis - dog & pork worms; cestodes
Side effects:
- short course treatment :has few side effects
- long course treatments: leucopenia, alopecia & elevation of liver enzymes
